A new challenge has arisen for the integrity of Spain. The seats of pro-independence parties have increased significantly in the elections held in Spain’s Catalonia province. Only 53 percent of voters voted in this provincial election in the midst of the Corona epidemic. During the election campaign, the Corona epidemic as well as the independence issue were overshadowed. The right-wing Vox Party got a seat in this province for the first time in this election. This is considered a major challenge for the centrist parties.
This was the first time in Catalan province, when pro-independence parties garnered more than half of the vote. He has got 51 percent votes. In the elections held in 2017, these parties received around 47.5 percent of the votes. Based on the latest results, these parties have won 74 seats in the 135-member provincial parliament. This is four more than the election of four years ago. Four years ago the Catalan province declared independence. After that, there was a lot of violence in the government action.
By the way, the Catalan Socialist Party has emerged as the largest party. It has got 23 percent votes and 33 seats. This party is a supporter of the unity of Spain. Among the pro-independence parties, the Catalan Republican Left also got 33 seats, but got only 21.3 percent of the vote. The pro-independence middle party Together for Catalonia has got 20 percent votes and 32 seats. The right-wing Vox Party has got 11 seats. In this case, it left behind the Conservative parties – the People’s Party and the Citizens’ Party. Citizens Party won 36 seats in 2017. In this way she had been the single largest party. This time it got only six seats. The Peoples Party, which was the largest party of the right wing in Spain for decades, had to settle for just three seats this time.
This election had to be held because Catalonia’s President Quim Tora was banned from holding his office last September. He was accused of having installed the symbol of independence of Catalonia on government buildings. Tora has been a separatist leader. But now the separatists have got more support than before. This has created new challenges for the unity of Spain.
Expressing happiness over the election results, Tora described it as a strong mandate in favor of independence. Laura Boras, leader of Together for Catalonia, said that since the first time pro-independence parties have received more than 50 percent of the vote, the result will be visible to both the government and parliament.
On the other hand, the pro-unity Socialist Party of Spain has said that it is time to change the chapter. His statement has been considered as an indication that the Socialist Party will try to form a government with other parties supporting unity. The Socialist Party is currently in power in Spain. After the election results, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said – the victory is of socialism. This is great news for bringing change and forging unity.
Analysts say the biggest weakness of pro-independence parties is the differences between them. Divisions in them in the last two years have reduced the edge of Catalonia’s demand for independence. The main differences between these parties are about the methods of attaining independence. The Catalan left party’s stance in this matter is moderate. She advocates achieving freedom from dialogue. While Together for Catalonia believes in confrontational methods.
Although separatist parties have received overwhelming support in the latest elections, a recent survey had revealed that 47.7 per cent of Catalonia’s people were against independence, while 44.5 per cent supported the demand. Therefore, despite the recent election results, Catalonia will be free immediately, it is unlikely. Experts say that the central government in Madrid can take the same kind of repression towards any such effort as was seen four years ago.
