The People’s Liberation Army is busy upgrading its missile base. A military source based in Beijing said that China has deployed its most sophisticated hypersonic missile DF-17 on the southeast coast. On the condition of anonymity, the source said that the DF-17 hypersonic missile will gradually replace the DF-11 and DF-15 missiles deployed in the southeast region for decades. He explained that the range of this new missile is greater and it is capable of penetrating targets more accurately.

The DA-17 hypersonic missile has a range of 2500 km. The missile was brought to the world on October 1 last year during the National Day Parade, marking 70 years of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Beijing considers Taiwan as its separate province, which it has vowed to withdraw if needed. Relations between Beijing and Taipei have worsened since Tsai Ing-wen was elected president of the Democratic Progressive Party in 2016 and refused to accept the One-China Doctrine.

Earlier, relations between Beijing and Taipei had also been tense during Tsai’s predecessor Chen Shui-ben as president. During that time China deployed missiles on the coasts of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces.

The US is also the reason for the deteriorating relationship between China and Taiwan this year. Taipei has been close to Washington and has signed several arms deals. It also includes agreements made for the upgrade of Patriot missiles and its F-16 Viper jets.
