With experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan (101 *) scoring his maiden IPL century, Delhi Capitals defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets. The team again topped the points table with a seventh win in nine matches. When 17 runs were required in the final over, Akshar Patel hit Delhi with a six over Ravindra Jadeja to give Delhi the victory. This is Chennai’s sixth defeat in nine matches.
Earlier in the match, Faf du Plessis (58) helped Chennai Super Kings to 179 for four. Faf shared an 87-run second wicket partnership with Shane Watson (36). Ambati Rayudu scored an unbeaten 45 off 25 balls and Ravindra Jadeja scored an unbeaten 33 off 13 balls. Delhi won by scoring 185 runs for five wickets in 19.5 overs.
Chasing the goal was not easy. The ball was coming to a halt on the pitch but Dhawan handled one end. He hit 14 fours and a six in his 58-ball innings. He also got life-giving but in the end he returned with a win. Akshar scored 21 off five balls which included three sixes.
Chennai opener Sam Karan (00) could not open the account after winning the toss. Faf and Watson took over. Faf was dismissed by Rabada, while Nortje dismissed Dhoni (03) in the 17th over, giving Chennai a big blow. Ravindra Jadeja, who scored a quick run in the death overs, hit four sixes, including a six that fell on the road outside the stadium and the passer-by picked up the ball. Rayudu and Jadeja added 50 runs in the unbroken fifth wicket partnership in 3.3 overs. In the final two overs, this season’s successful pace pair of Rabada and Nortje conceded 32 runs in front of Rayudu and Jadeja.
