Dominic Thiem and Rafael Nadal won their opening matches of the ATP Tour Finals tennis tournament. In the match played on Sunday, the thiem made a great start by defeating defending champion Stephanos Sitipas while star player Rafael Nadal also made his debut with the win.
Thiems, who had lost against Sitsipas in the final last year, won the opening singles 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in the nearly empty O2 Arena. In another match of the day, Nadal did not sweat much to defeat Andre Rublev, who was playing in the tournament for the first time. Nadal defeated the Russian player 6-3, 6-4 in just one hour and 17 minutes.
Significantly, during this season affected by the Corona virus pandemic, Nadal won the 20th Grand Slam title, equaling Roger Federer’s record as well as his 1000th win on the ATP Tour. Now Nadal wants to end the season by winning the ATP Finals for the first time.
