At the beginning of the month globally, 274 journalists have been jailed due to their work and around three dozen of them are accused of giving ‘fake news’. China tops them.
This data has been released by the Committee to Protect Journalists. The committee said that this is the fifth consecutive year when at least 250 journalists are in custody, reflecting the repressive measures of governments.
Turkey and Egypt are followed by China in the case of keeping journalists in jail. At the same time a large number of journalists are in custody due to political deadlock in Belarus and Ethiopia. The committee said that 29 journalists have been killed so far this year as compared to 26 last year.
The committee’s official, Courtney Radssh, said that this year, due to infection, the number of journalists is less in conflict areas where they can be victims of war. The US Press Freedom Trekker told that earlier this month no journalist has been murdered in the US, nor is anyone still in jail.
But in 2020, 110 journalists were arrested and charged with criminal charges. There are 47 journalists in prison in China, three of whom are in jail for news related to the government’s move on the Covid-19 epidemic.
