India’s young international master Leon Luke Mendonca came closer to the coveted Grandmaster title. Mendonka has won the GM (Grandmaster) Chess tournament with one round remaining in Hungary. The 14-year-old Goan player achieved his Grandmaster Norm (standard) for the second time within 21 days, with his ‘First Saturday GM November 2020’ victory in Budapest on Monday evening. He now needs another norm to earn a GM degree.
Mendonca sealed the title with 7.5 points with one round remaining. He has been invincible in the tournament so far and during this time he defeated two grandmasters. In the nine rounds of this championship, he recorded six wins while three matches were drawn. Earlier in October he won his first Grand Slam Norm by winning the title of Rigo Chess International Festival in Hungary.
