Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte and his entire cabinet resigned on Friday, taking political responsibility for a scandal involving child welfare payments. The investigation of the case has revealed that the scam was falsely accused of cheating the parents.
In an address to the nation on television, Rutte said he had informed the Netherlands Emperor William Alexander of his decision. He was promised that his government would soon give compensation to the affected parents and continue to fight Corona.
Rutte said, ‘We believe that if the whole system fails, everyone should take responsibility. We came to the conclusion that I submitted the resignation of the entire cabinet to the emperor. Root’s government will hold office until a new government is formed after the election on 17 March.
After Rutte’s resignation, a decade of holding the post ended. However, his party hopes to win the election, and he is at the forefront of starting negotiations to form the next government. If he succeeds in forming a new coalition, Rutte is likely to become prime minister again.
