Russia's President Vladimir Putin introduced a bill in Parliament to extend the nuclear weapons

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday introduced a bill in Parliament to extend the nuclear weapons treaty with the US for five years. Russia’s ‘New Start’ treaty with the US on nuclear weapons was to end next week.

The ‘New Start’ agreement is now the only agreement between the US and Russia. The agreement has been extremely important in keeping Russia’s nuclear forces at bay and for strategic stability between the two countries. The ‘New Start’ treaty was signed in 2010, under which 1550 nuclear weapons could be deployed by Moscow and Washington. Moscow and Washington are among the highest nuclear weapons owners in the world.
