There have been public protests in Bangladesh on the streets and on social media after several incidents of sexual harassment recently surfaced, amidst nationwide protests. After which Sheikh Hasina cabinet on Monday approved the maximum punishment in rape cases from life imprisonment to death penalty.
The cabinet unanimously supported the amended law. Ministerial spokesperson Khandkar Anwarul Islam said that President Abdul Hamid can issue ordinances amending the Women and Child Harassment Act, as Parliament is not in session yet. The details of this amendment have not been revealed immediately, but Khandkar said that the cabinet agreed to the proposal that the rape case should be heard soon.
