Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has apologized to the employees on the farewell of Dr Timneet Gabru, head researcher of the company’s Artificial Intelligence (AI). Along with this, he has started investigating the case of Gabru leaving the job. Dr. Gabru said last week that the company had fired him after sending an email.
In the case of Dr. Gabru, the company was criticized for its AI technology biased with women and minorities. Gabru said he had sought clarification as to why the company had asked him to withdraw a paper that pointed out flaws in one of the racial cases.
Pichai said, ‘I have listened carefully to the reaction of Gabru’s departure. This raised suspicion that some people in our community have raised questions on Google. I want to say that I am very sorry for this incident and I accept the responsibility of working to restore your trust.
Let me tell you that Gabru was a researcher of a case in which algorithms were being worked out to identify white faces as compared to black and brown people.
