The impeachment against the sitting US president has been supported by more than 215 Democrats and five Republican lawmakers in the House. 218 votes were required to impeach. Leader of the House Hoyer said he would send the impeachment articles immediately to the US Senate.
The US House of Representatives, controlled by Democratic leaders, voted Wednesday on a impeachment motion against outgoing US President Donald Trump in the wake of a violent attack on the Capitol Building (US Parliament House) last week.
With the vote on impeachment motion, Trump became the first president in American history to be impeached twice. MPs Jamie Ruskin, David Ciciline and Ted Liu prepared a motion for impeachment which was sponsored by 211 members of the House of Representatives.
In this impeachment motion, Trump has been accused of ‘inciting treason’ on January 6 through his steps. Trump instigated his supporters to lay siege to the Capitol Building (Parliament Complex) while counting votes for the Electoral College.
The resolution said that this process was disrupted due to the attacks by people during counting of votes. Five people, including a police officer, were killed in the incident.
Earlier, impeachment charges were passed against Trump on December 18, 2019, but he was acquitted of the charges in February 2020 by the Senate controlled by the Republican Party. It was alleged during that time that Trump pressured the President of Ukraine to investigate corruption claims against Biden and his son.
