When Mikhail Gorbachev became the Secretary-General of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and President of the country, the Soviet Union was a superpower and rival of America. But the Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991 when he was president. Hence his remarks about recent events in America have been carefully listened to worldwide. Analysts say Gorbachev has direct experience of the collapse of a superpower. Therefore, America should also take his words seriously. Regarding the Trump mob attack on Capitol Hill in Washington on January 6, Gorbachev said the incident was an indication that the threat to the US remains intact. The 89-year-old former Soviet leader made the remarks in an interview to the Interfax News Agency on Friday. He said- ‘This incident has raised questions on the future of the United States.’ Gorbachev said it was clear that the attack was planned in advance. It is also clear who is responsible for this.
After becoming the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985, Gorbachev launched plans for openness and restructuring – Glasnost and Perestroika. In 1991, some Communist Party leaders tried to overthrow him. Those leaders alleged that Gorbachev leaned towards Western countries. Gorbachev was also accused of being an ‘agent of America’. In the latest interview, Gorbachev said – it will take some time, but we will understand why this (attack on Capitol Hill) happened.
Gorbachev signed INF (Inter Range Nuclear Treaty) in 1987 with then US President Ronald Reagan. It was then considered an important step towards nuclear disarmament. In the interview, he also expressed his opinion on the possibility of another arms race and the current relationship between the US and Russia. The Trump administration recently separated the US from the then Soviet Union by several agreements for disarmament.
The Trump administration also reduced US involvement in several international organizations over the past four years. During this time the US withdrew from UNESCO and the Human Rights Council. He also withdrew from the INF treaty. The Biden administration, now in power, is expected to adopt a positive attitude towards international organizations. But Biden and his Democratic Party’s stance towards Russia remains stern. Therefore, speculations are being made about the Biden administration’s stand on agreements with Russia.
Gorbachev also said that the new generation will not accept the arms race. People want to be united, not war. Leaders have to find a way for this. They have to make new treaties to eliminate all kinds of weapons. We should not give up hope. We should trust the new generation.
